Someone who you think is just the worst person in the world, but everyone seems to love and make excuses for? Like some of Duncan's other novels before, Summer of Fear was renamed Stranger In Our House and made into a film in 1978 directed by Wes Craven and starring Linda Blair as Rachael and, a then unknown, Fran Drescher as Rachael's best friend. A camera is a machine and machines cannot be coerced, she's told. I wasn't really sure what was going to happen next and I worried for Rachel's safety. Rachel starts to notice very odd things about Julia. I knew, of course, that she went to a boarding school in New England because there were no good public schools in the area of her mountain home.
It really pulled the track together. Knowing that the person living in her house doesn't have any interest in music, Rachel further suspects something is not right. Very adult themes in some places, but definitely touted as Juvenile fiction. Yes, this book has a very, unknown film that stars Linda Blair and was directed by Wes Craven. I think the author really did bring tension when Rachel and her ex boyfriend raced towards the highway to prevent her mother from falling to her death in the curve.
At first, Rachael likes Julia but as the story goes on, Rachael starts to become suspicious. Austin Amelio will appear as a crossover character from The Walking Dead Dwight. However, it is still effective, especially for fans of psychological thrillers. Bad things start happening soon after she moves in, and it soon becomes apparent that there's something not quite right about Julia, to put it mildly. A live version appears on their 2002 album. Alexa Nisenson, who joined the cast in Season 4 as Charlie, will play the same role as a series regular in Season 5. Julia was always the victim and Rachel always the bad guy, the one they must punish. It was almost unpleasant to read about her though because of how awful she was.
After a little research, she starts to suspect that Julia's actually a witch and it's a little more like The Craft than, say, Sabrina the Teenage After Rachel's aunt and uncle die in a car accident, her orphaned cousin, Julia, comes to live with the family. Nothing particularly exciting happened until the end. Because Lois Duncan sure has! They were horribly titled and so soap operatic that few could survive to the very end. The updates were so poor I would have enjoyed the outdated 1970s version much more. This was a reread for me. Rachel has a great teenage girl-movie life, until a tragedy brings her cousin who she's never met to live with them. I really hated the character of Julia, but I guess you are supposed to. So therefore, even though I do have to admit that Summer of Fear is well enough written and as a teenager, certainly kept me up all night reading with suspense and appreciation, I really can and will now only grant a one star ranking at best for Summer of Fear and yes, Summer of Fear is thus also and sadly most definitely a novel that I actively regret having revisited, for what was mildly entertaining, suspenseful and readable in 1982 has now completely dissipated, and really, Lois Duncan's obvious authorial disdain for the people of the Ozark Mountains of Missouri does majorly make me cringe and rub me the wrong proverbial way. Immersing herself in books on the occult, Rachel starts to believe Julia is a witch.
More confident behind the wheel, I wished we could roll on and add a few Joshua Tree days to our Airstream adventure. I'm pretty sure no one does that anymore. The mother is a photographer who works for magazines and shuns digital photography and still uses film and her dark room and mails in her photos. Despite her hangups about her curly red hair, Rachael also has a cute boyfriend named Mike, who is literally the-boy-next-door. Reading it as an adult made me think of the draw of this story. At least for a Rachel is fifteen, has a great boyfriend and a great family.

For fans of trivia or pop culture, there was a made for television movie based on this book starring Linda Blair, which aired in 1978. Sure, it will take some getting used to sharing her room with someone, but it will be like having an older sister. It was kind of a predictable story line when you think about it. I had never pulled a trailer that long or that heavy, nor one that would cost quite so much to replace. I think I would have appreciated the book more if the author just let the story simmer in that 1970s time period. All three films are being released back-to-back, with the possible intent to release them theatrically a month apart.
